How Can Mindfulness Lead to a Creative Lifestyle?

It is not a simple meditation technique. It is a way of thinking that can help lead to a prosperous way of life.

When you’re an artist, you’re said to be creative. And to be creative, you tend to look at things in many different ways and not just settle for what is obvious. That’s what makes artistic people be what they are because they don’t rely merely on what their senses tell them, but they try to interpret their perceptions based on their personal observations and experiences. But do you know that every person has what it takes to be creative? The key lies in the way of thinking. Mindfulness is that one proven technique that will surely give birth to a wealth of possibilities in the way you see the world. Other than it being a method of relaxation to reach balance and peace, it allows you to be sensitive, discerning, and innovative. And once you are able to master this form of focus and concentration, then you’ll be amazed at how you are able to transform your day-to-day living into one that is always productive. As a result, you become more prosperous and confident in your lifestyle. Here’s how.

Start from one area of concern

One at a time

Sharpen your senses by starting to spend some minutes of the day to take stock of your surroundings. Shake off any thought or emotion that’s keeping you from doing your observation, and concentrate on aspects where you want to make improvements. If it’s work that you’re having an issue with, zero in on that area and assess the situation independent of any other thought that is not directly related it. People tend to be overwhelmed because they want to deal with all their hang-ups or problems all at the same time. Doing so would only worsen the stress.

Be a keen observer

Since you will focus on one area at a time, your attention will not wander towards other concerns and you now have a better state of mind in examining the situation. A person tasked to develop a product, for example, would understand that he needs to closely observe what his intended market needs and wants, and think deeply about how his product would behave  and what it intends to address. He doesn’t just come out with an item that is attractive. He seeks to know and understand his product can offer and how his consumers would benefit from it

 

Maintain a journal

Take down ideas as they come and don’t rely on your memory alone when you observe Once you start doing this, you will notice the power of written ideas versus those that remain in the recesses of your brain. Soon, you can see better how the ideas connect and flow, which more often than not, lead you to more ideas and solutions.

Always ask yourself, “What else do I need to consider?” Move towards thinking of ways and tools that you can perhaps adopt, or insights and realizations that can only be obtained when you’re practicing mindfulness. Don’t restrict your mind from spewing as many ideas as possible because you might just get a brilliant idea or an “AHA” moment from any one of those that came to mind.

 

Details, details

Don’t overdo it by jotting down every bit of detail down to the last drop. Once an idea comes up, record the what, how, and why of it, just enough to create a meaningful explanation or description. Don’t be vague and instead be clear in your notations. Use not only words but figures and illustrations to help you remember your thoughts.

Visualize

There is no point in recording your observations if you don’t see the small and big pictures. You have to allow yourself to create a colourful scenario of what you want to achieve (like if it’s a product that you’re developing) and how you want to get there. Successful people make vision boards to illustrate their goals and remind them of what they need to do.

 

Practice makes perfect

When you’re done with your mindfulness exercise for a certain area of concern, do the same thing for your succeeding “projects.” You’ll be surprised at how your brain has now been trained to think creatively and freely. You now will ask yourself, “how come I didn’t think of that before?” The answer is it’s because you were used to not paying close attention to relevant details and so you were always skimming the surface of things.

 

Remember, mindfulness begets creativity, which then leads to more focused ideas and solutions. You need not be an artist nor a genius to have an innovative way of thinking.
